Artscape commissioned me to work photographically with young people between 11 to14 years . New skills were developed through discussion about composition, the use of digital cameras and Photoshop. We became part of a wider project called ‘Cowley Echoes’. Unique visual perspectives on Cowley Road were displayed at the photographic exhibition held at Artscape Gallery, Warneford Hospital, Oxford Artweeks 2009. These are a few images from their exhibition.
I was commissioned to explore, with staff and pupils from year 5, the value of using photography as a means of recording scientific experiments .
Photography helped their scientific learning, aided their ability to work in small groups, enhanced independent decision - making, and was a particularly successful way to involve learners with special needs.
The children created a permanent gallery of images in addition to making an exhibition of ‘descriptive images’ which showed their experiments and the sort of skills they acquired in editing and processing through new IT software. A small sample of their gallery images are shown here.
